I'm back! The world cup is over and so my world returns to some sense of normality...or does it? There's emails waiting for me...the relentless emails that just keep on hounding me, stalking me wherever I go. There's someone who's following me on Twitter. Another who wants to befriend me on FB. My best friend just uploaded some pics on Flickr. S-T-O-P-P-P! Weren't we promised that technology was gonna make life simpler and give us more freedom? I have underestimated the value of me-time, finding that quiet spot in my day becomes more and more of a challenge. Nobody is teaching me how to manage this bombardment of information and trivialities...my curious nature easily allows me to get sucked into the social networking frenzy perhaps a bit out of fear of becoming a spectator. I don't like being a spectator. Were we really designed to be contactable 24/7? In today's world it is almost expected. The lines between work and personal time has become blurred or almost non-existent.
What do I do with all these mails? Perhaps I will need them in future in case they have a competition as to who has the biggest digital footprint. Did someone comment on my picture? I must see what they said. There is no getting away from this technology...I have to choose carefully which ones I use, how and when I use them or perhaps decide only to exist in cyberspace. But I guess I exist with one foot in the "real world" and the other in cyberspace I need to find a balance ... I think there is a danger of too much of the one....my guess is it's the one I wasn't born in...

As technology more and more becomes a part of our lives there is an increase in its prevalence within the classroom. Cell phones, MP3 player...
TekTiks, you have definitely hit the nail on the head! After all,it seems to me that the more 'technologically advanced' we seem to get, the more complex our lives become and slowly but surely our lives are becoming more geared and centralized towards all these technological stuff that we have. My concern becomes, as you rightly mention, that " me" time, and other essentials that we need to have quality lives, are being sacrificed and in danger of becoming distant memories.
ReplyDeleteSo I guess the question we should ask ourselves is this: Where is the value of the human in all this? Do we sacrifice those very qualities that make us human in order to keep up with the tecks, or do we pause, as you say, and take a look around at the kinds of technologies we are introducing in our lives, and its long term impacts?
I don't know; it a tough one and I don't claim to have all the right answers, but may be some answers may lie in something as simple as reaching out and shutting down that computer for a couple of hours a day, or even making a conscious decision not to check one's e mails on Saturdays and Sundays, all in the spirit of "me time".
