I just came through a two grueling weeks of workshops. The one was on teaching and learning and the other on Community, Self and Identity. This post is dedicated to the use of the Sony Bloggie MHS-CH5.
As it is a bloggie it only records 30 min at a time max before cutting out and then you have to press the record button again. Here is my big tip. MAKE SURE THAT U STUDY THE MANUAL THOROUGHLY! The convenience of an on-board USB device makes losing your cable less of a concern. However, and extension comes in handy when your laptop's USB inputs are at an awkward angle. I found having two bloggies to cover something like a seminar/ workshop useful as I didn't have a charger for the batteries and so I alternated between the two bloggies. By the way, ...to charge the bloggie you will need to stick it into a USB port with the flip out screen closed. Remember that zooming in and out eats away at the battery run time so keep it to a minimum. Downloading your videos and images is just as convenient as there is an expandable slot for an SD-card. The audio quality is fair but remember that this is not a handycam so don't come with any microphone inputs for an external microphone.
The optical zoom is a big plus for me as you don't need to get upclose and personal with your subject but if you do prefer to do so the auto-focus will do the job. All in all I think it is a nice camera. Small enough to fit into your jacket pocket but not that small that you will mistake it for a packet of smokes. The picture quality is adjustable and under the right lighting conditions you will get pretty superb pictures. There is software that comes with the camera that will enable you to download and edit a basic video and manage your images but don't expect too much from it. Is it value for money? Well it's a SONY. It looks pretty slick and it does the job for me. Give it a try and compare with some other makes like JVC, KODAK, FLIP etc. then decide. There will always be one better out there at the rate that technology progresses.
